Mary Richardson Jones Park
By Christine Escobar
Downtown parks are rare in Chicago, but Mary Richardson Jones Park holds a unique place for preschoolers and their parents in its South Loop neighborhood. The South Loop, in recent years, has grown into a thriving community within downtown and the park sits in a development of single family homes and townhomes and is adjacent to a public grade school.
Preschooler Friendly Features of the Park
At least half of the park is grassy with several low shade trees that make a nice place to have a picnic. The entire playground rests on a textured, soft blue surface which makes it safe in case of falls. Preschoolers will love to play on the big red train. It features an engine, cars to sit in and a caboose. Also nearby is a playhouse/ticket counter, mini slide and rocking animals and horses.
A few steps away is the standard playground equipment complete with slide and several climbing features. This makes the park suitable not only for young children but also older siblings, too.
Another unique feature is the shaded sitting area with benches located within view of the playground. These benches provide a good place for parents to have a seat or nurse a younger sibling. They are also welcome on a hot day, as most of the park's playground is not shaded.

What Parents Should Consider When Visiting The Park
On weekends the park is quiet. But during school days it can be busier, especially when school kids go home for the day. However, the park is Park District property and is open to the public even during school hours. Street parking is permitted, but parents should be aware of neighborhood permit regulations on many nearby side streets. Public transit is probably the best bet for getting to the park without the hassle of parking.
