Superdawg
By Christine Escobar
Not your ordinary hot dog stand, Superdawg is a Chicago legend. Having been in the same location on the northwest side of Chicago for over 50 years, customers come from all over to sample their “secret recipe” dogs.
The restaurant, at the corner of Devon and Milwaukee avenues, is a drive-up restaurant (a very rare find in Chicago nowadays). You park at one of the stalls, press a button next to the menu display and a server takes your order through an intercom. The menu is not vast, but definitely has its unique traits.
There’s no doubt, preschoolers will marvel at the giant hotdog figures perched on top of the restaurant with lighted, blinking eyes. This is especially exciting if you visit Superdawg at night, when the exterior of the building is lit with neon lights, too.
Preschoolers will also enjoy the push-button ordering, food delivered right to the car (complete with condiments and a tray that attaches to the driver’s side window) and best of all: eating in the car. All meals are served in tidy boxes decorated with Superdawg’s nostalgic characters, and all sandwiches come complete with handcut fries cleverly tucked right beside.
There are no designated kids meals, but portions are of reasonable size and not excessive. Recommended are the Superchickenmidgees™, Superdawg’s version of chicken tenders and the shakes and ice cream sundaes. The chocolate Supermalt™ is definitely not to be missed.
